MATTE PAINTING PROCESS POST
I was tasked with creating a Matte Painting using photo bashing techniques using four planes. I did my research and browsed the internet looking at multiple photo bashing techniques and styles, noticing that a lot of matte paintings were being done with environmental elements such as trees, mountains and overall any terrain. I decided that i would try create a matte painting of outer space and its beauty. With my base plan in mind i continued my research until i found all the the necessary pieces needed.
Disclaimer: This matte painting depicts characters from the HALO gaming franchise and is a personal project created for educational and portfolio purposes.
THE BASE
During my research for the base of my matte painting i came across plenty of great candidates. My thought process seeing all of the intergalactic photos inspired me create a War in the future for the overall painting instead of starships flying through space which was my original idea. So with that i crossed out all photos that didn't have a bottom to them (floor). With only two photos left i decided to with the first picture of the top row because the ambience/lighting of the original photo the darker lighting givers a more ominous feeling.
Adding the first pieces..
With my base photo selected i scoured the internet once again for my next plane after removing some elements from the original photo that was obstructing my new battlefield. I need something to bring my war idea to life, I found starships that i saved for my original idea and instead added them to be drones shooting laser beams down in the distance. I then found my main soldier and placed him into position observing the battlefield along side a downed drone.
Now were painting!

Trying new pieces in and out i found some that stuck, starting i added more soldier's to complete my attacking force. I then started using my adjustment layers to fix the lighting of the separate soldiers to match my overall environment. I then adjusted some coloring of my main solider to match the rest. Mockup 2 i decided to add an extra cargo ship in the middle of the painting, then hit my adjustment layers again to clean up lighting issues. I then added shadows to the soldiers and under the cargo ship.
Final Matte Painting!
I received my critiques' and got right to work, adjusting the lighting of the middle cargo ship to be slightly darker to match the background a little more. Then fixed the shadows of my soldiers that were offset and lightened up the density. I then added one extra shadow to the starships with the laser beams onto the planet and added gaussian blur to the furthermost left soldier to complete my Matte Painting Project!
